Straw marquetry is the meticulous art of applying flattened rye straw, piece by piece, to a surface. Traditionally used on furniture and panels, here it is transformed into architecture. Created in collaboration with Lison de Caunes, France’s leading authority on straw marquetry, this is a rare sculptural expression of a centuries-old craft. Two women from different generations, Lison and Farah, saw eye to eye. A shared belief in craft, patience, and the power of pushing a material to its edge and making it modern. Farah had a vision: to create a three-dimensional sculpture using only flat materials and a single color. Black. A serious, sober tone. But as you move around the piece, it shifts. What feels still, begins to breathe.
The same straw is cut and laid at opposing angles in precise chevron patterns, creating contrast from direction alone. Without color or ornament, this directional inlay becomes the sculpture’s focal point, revealing depth, energy, and quiet movement in every line.
Along its spine, 368 hand-cut mother-of-pearl stones are inlaid with quiet precision. A soft glint inside the dark. Designed to be walked around, lived with, and seen differently each time. Handmade in Paris and London.
